FAQ
Question: Should I buy Microsoft Windows Server User CALs or Device CALs?
Answer: Fewer employees than devices demand User CALs. More devices than users demand Device CALs. Do not mix User and Device CALs on the same server. They’re cheaper to buy and manage that way.
Question: Does my Multifunction Networked Printer need a Device CAL?
Answer: If your Multifunction Networked Printer uses Microsoft Windows DNS, Microsoft Windows DHCP or is configured in Active Directory and connected to using Active Directory, you need a device CAL. If your Multifunction Printer gets its DNS and IP address from a router/switch/firewall or is configured with a static address and uses direct printing from a user’s computer, you do not need a CAL.
Question: Does my VoIP phone need a Device CAL?
Answer: If your VoIP phone uses Microsoft Windows DNS or Microsoft Windows DHCP, you need a device CAL. If your VoIP phone gets its DNS and IP address from a router/switch/firewall, you do not need a CAL.
Question: Does everything connected to a Microsoft Windows network need a CAL?
Answer: No… Think about networks as mechanical/electrical things, agnostic about what brands of software run on it. If the network connected device gets its DNS or DHCP from Microsoft Windows, you need a device CAL. If the network connected device gets its DNS and IP address from a non Microsoft Windows router/switch/firewall, you do not need a CAL.
